Pilates Golf - Drive Further, Play Longer

Pilates For Golfers

Pilates is an exercise technique that acknowledges the power of the mind and approaches the fitness of the body as a whole, working to improve:

'Control'                'Mobility'                'Alignment'

Why Pilates and Golf?

  • Improved core strength will reduce the risk of injury and increase power
  • Better mobility will help your swing
  • You will see an increase in coordination throughout your game
  • Increased flexibility will reduce the risk of injury and enhance your swing
  • Improved balance will enable you to produce a more powerful drive

The Pilates institute method will allow the golfer to have a better set up which is so important to the swing.  Improved balance will create a consistent swing and drive through, resulting in improved power and accuracy.

Pilates Principles and the Golfer

Concentration
Developing the ability to concentrate for longer periods of time will enable the player to re-create the best possible set up and performance.- this ability to re-create quality movement is essential to the development of the game.

Flowing Movement
With practice the Pilates technique becomes about continuous movement.  The ability to sustain quality and consistent flowing movement becomes natural.  This ability to become relaxed and controlled at the same time will have a beneficial effect on your game of golf.

Control
The golf swing requires strength and control - without these, technique will suffer.

Isolation
In order to bring together all elements of the Pilates Institute Method, the ability to isolate and focus on various parts of the body is essential to create and improve body awareness and improve your golf as a result.

Centring
Without a strong centre the golfer risks injury as a result of repetitive behaviours.  A strong core and postural stability will allow the golfer to maintain the spine angle through the swing.

Breathing
Coordinated lateral breathing is the cornerstone of the Pilates Institute Method that will enable the centre to remain engaged and the pelvic alignment to be maintained in a neutral position.  This focus will also assist the control of movement.

Precision
Quality of movement through the game is important for consistent play

Routine
Practice makes perfect. However the repetitious nature of the game of golf increase the risk of injury.  Regular Pilates practice will reduce the risk.  However, the ability to re-create precision is essential to all serious sports people.
